PROJECT
1225 Wardrobes
YEAR
2021
Wardian’s vision was to bring nature into this building to create a sanctuary amongst the sky scrapers and bustle of Canary Wharf.
The design took inspiration from the great explorer and innovator Dr Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward. He was responsible for the creation of the Wardian Case, used to transport plants around the world at the height of the British Empire. International plant experts were bought in to source hundreds of exotic plants and flowers that would change with the seasons. Every resident also gains access to The Wardian Club, exclusive facilities include a 25m open air swimming pool, gym, cinema, two restaurants and a double height rooftop sky garden with mature trees.
THE BRIEF
Ballymore contacted Commonfield to discuss an exciting new project they were working on. This build comprised two residential towers of 55 and 50 storeys containing 766 homes including suites, one and two bedroom apartments and penthouses. The brief was very clear, a wardrobe was required in every bedroom that seamlessly fitted into the high specifications of these two incredible buildings.
- Start on site: April 2019
- Complete on site: January 2021
- Quantity: 1225 wardrobes
- Product Type: MFC hinged doors and internal components. Full carcase, rebated LED lighting.
THE PROCESS
Commonfield worked on a response to Ballymore’s brief, details included technical CAD drawings to show how the mix of 2, 3, 4 and 5 door wardrobes would be fitted into the different room layouts. The design specifications included full carcase internals with access hatches and scribes around boxing in. Samples of the hinged doors, handles and internal fixings were presented along with the designs.
The installation plan led by our Site Manager was to be delivered in one phase to meet the build deadline. We had manufacturing time and fitting teams ready for the first call off of plots.
THE RESULT
The fleetwood doors and black steel handle together with lava grey interior worked well to create a statement in every bedroom and was in keeping with the vision for the building to combine man-made design with the natural world. Work was completed by the end of January 2021 with all 1225 wardrobes installed on time and on budget and signed off by Ballymore’s Site Manager.

DOLLAR BAY LONDON DOCKLANDS
We were very excited to get the opportunity to work on Dollar Bay for Mount Anvil. The brief was split into the main building and penthouses. The theme within the building was to offer elegant open-plan design with uninterrupted views over London and a focus on indoor to outdoor living. The penthouse properties opted for hinged doors with cut out exposed shelving detail and a fully lined carcase.
